This page from San Francisco Chronicler’s December 19th, 1969, issue shines a scanned light on the influences of Ralph Lauren’s Polo line. The lapels are vast enough to land on and raise shivers, but it was elements from America’s Golden Age of dress, the 1930’s, that inspired Lauren’s designs. While the 1974 film version of The Great Gatsby featured designs by Theoni V. Aldredge, it was Ralph Lauren who made the clothes for all male actors, and the only suit bespoken for the story was Gatsby’s ‘God-damned pink suit!’ Those familiar with the story will also remember what happens to men who don pink suits.
