The ’80s Drape Suit

Today’s link leads to an old New York Magazine article on custom tailoring, titled ‘Bespeaking of Suits‘ and dated 1988. The extensive text features Linda Dyett’s journey into the tailoring circles of the ’80s New York, with commentary and guidance from G. Bruce Boyer and Hardy Amies, who took Dyett under their high-cut armholes, explaining the variables of cuts and fineries of cloths. The article also offers a fascinating anatomy of the ’80s drape suit as well as a surprising shot of one Alan Flusser with a dark set of hair. Other tailors include John Reyle, Henry Stewart, Piero Dimitri, Vincent Nicolosi, William Fioravanti, Garrick Anderson, the travelling Anderson&Sheppard and Edward Sexton. Sartorially speaking, the ’80s was a mistake. Yet this fine article from NY serves as proof that the decade had a modicum of well-tailored men, likely condensed within the City’s borders.
