The once-proper shoe factory of G.H. Bass created the first model in 1936, based on the flat, laceless shoes worn in Norway. Every maker has a version of this shoe model, but for those seeking something different, my tip is Aurlandskoen. Still made in Norway, this factory’s penny loafers differ by their strong, up-turned front seam. Having never handled examples from Aurland, I can give no verdicts on the factory’s quality. Judging by lasts and pricing alone, the pairs likely offer similar quality as Loake, but with a Nordic touch.

http://www.aurlandskoen.no/

Those in the know do indeed know the origins of the penny loafer.
